안녕하세요 UMD 가족 여러분,
급한 전달이 있어 이렇게 공지사항으로 인사드립니다.
다름이 아니라, ECE 대학원에 재학 중이신 "마영란" 씨께서 건강상의 문제로 지금 입원 중이신데요
상황이 매우 안 좋은 것 같습니다. 저도 아직까지는 정확한 사태 파악이 되지 않고 있습니다만,
건강상의 문제 뿐 아니라 치료에 필요한 금전적이 문제들까지 겹친 상황이신 것 같네요.
ECE의 다른 친구에게서 아래 메일을 포워딩 받았는데요,
UMD의 한국 학우여러분들께서 작지만 많은 사람의 정성을 모아 도와드리면 어떨까 해서,
또 이런 일이 있다는 것을 여러분들께 말씀드리고자 합니다.
아직 어떤 방식으로 어떻게 도움을 전달해 드릴지는 전혀 논의된 바가 없습니다만,
작년 KGSA-KISA 음악회를 통해 모금된 (원래 한국에 계신 독거노인분들에게 성금으로 기부하려했던)
750불 가량의 금액을 우선 어려움을 겪고 계신 분께 전달하는 것은 어떨까 생각 중입니다.
이번 일과 관련해서 거희 학생회 측에서도 논의를 해본 후 빠른 시일내에 방법을 마련해 보겠습니다만,
어떤 의견이라도 있으신 분들은 주저말고 답글 남겨주시거나 저희에게 연락주시면
대단히 감사하겠습니다.
어려움에 처하신 학우분의 빠른 쾌유를 기원합니다.

Dear Friends,
Youngran (Mary Kiemb) Ma, a PhD student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and a Graduate Fellow (distinction awarded to about 2% of applicants) at UMD, is in dire need of help. She has been recently diagnosed with a rare disease known as transverse myelitis, which could leave her paralyzed for the rest of her life. For the past couple of weeks, she has been at the Georgetown University Hospital. However she urgently needs to undergo "acute rehab", which is available only in certain specialized facilities, such as the National Rehabilitation Facility (NRH) in DC. Unfortunately, her health insurance refuses to pay for this. As of this morning, Mary has been temporarily admitted into NRH. However, for her to remain in the facility and to receive a continuous, successful treatment she needs your financial support. We estimate that the total amount that is needed is $70,000.
Every day counts for Mary. Chances that she will fully recover decrease with every day that passes. A fund has been created where contributions can be made towards the needed sum. By way of this email I am appealing to you to open your heart to Mary, and make any contribution you can afford to make.
Please note that it is important to understand that this is a humanitarian effort on our part and your donation will not be considered a charitable contribution. As such, your donation will NOT be tax deductible. However, we can assure you that all of the funds collected will be used directly for Mary's care and are critically important to Mary's chances for a full recovery.

| 그것도 좋은 방법일 것 같네요. 각 과별로 제가 아는 분들께 연락은 드린 상태인데 어떤 방식으로 어떻게 모금을 할지 오늘밤과 내일 지켜봐야 할 것 같습니다. 아는 분의 말씀으로는 상황이 매우 좋지 않고 (개인적인 신변문제까지 공론화하기에는 문제가 있을것 같아 이렇게만 알려드립니다) 치료가 매우매우 시급한 상황이라고 하네요. |

| 먼저 마영란 학우님의 조속한 회복을 빕니다.
지금 현재 학우님의 상태나 구체적인 모금 계획이 어떻게 되어가는건가요? 글을 보니 당장 7만불이 필요한 것 같은데 물론 적은 돈은 아니지만 사람의 건강이나 생명에 비할 바는 아니겠지요.
우선 마영란 학우님의 가족, 학과의 도움 및 지원을 고려해서 현실적인 한인 학생회 차원의 목표 모금액을 정해놓는 것도 좋을 듯 한데요. (목표 금액과 현재 모금액을 가시화하면 모금에 도움이 되지 않을까요?)
그리고 transverse myelitis가 ys님이 언급하신 바와 같이 multiple sclerosis의 초기 증상으로도 나타날 수 있다고 하니 관련된 여러 단체에 연락해보는 것도 좋은 생각인 것 같습니다. |

Dear Friends,
I would like to thank those of you who have contributed generously to Mary's cause. André deserves particular paise for the tremendous work he has done on Mary's behalf, however, we all need to pitch in to help her. Mary's condition continues to be very serious. Your contritutions are critical to ensuring that Mary recieves the best care possible at the National Rehabilitation Hospital. Thus far we have raised only a few percent of the $70,000 needed for Mary's care. I implore you to give what you can to help Mary. You can find details on how to make your contributions below.
